JOSHUA THOMAS

TEDDY & LEIGH

WRITTEN BY JOSHUA THOMAS

Teddy was a dancer
It's like he had gold in his feet
He’d almost leave his body
Rounding Saturn in a leap

When he was a baby
He hit a hard turn in the family aisle
He had a special answer
For all who’d greet him with a pitiful smile

He said disaster is a master
Like a murmur of clarity
While you’re reeling from what the world is stealing
You’ll think of someone you want to be

Leigh almost left her lover
And her daughter of three
She packed a little suitcase
And started breathing, quite magically

She knew it wouldn’t matter
She never had an eye to see anything complete
She took apart her suitcase
And called Cecilia, her whiskey neat

She said that laughter is what I’m after
I’ve never mastered the feel
The thought of stealing is almost healing
Threading fingers with something real

Teddy took a deep breath
Surrendered to the lights of the stage
Leigh darkened up the doorway
Found a seat and turned a page

What she saw was golden
She thought he was flying through the air
Teddy left his body
And Leigh left Monday, with nothing to wear
